City
Budget Breakfast
This
annual event gives the arts community a brief but effective moment to
monopolize the ears of harried elected officials during the spring budget
negotiations. Arts advocates put a personal face, a story, and persuasive
data behind their requests for increased funds for the Department of
Cultural Affairs. This lively, relaxed, and informative breakfast originated
in the late 1980s, and has developed into an event that is looked forward
to by government officials and arts advocates alike.
What Happens
- Data
regarding the history of appropriations to the Department of Cultural
Affairs is distributed.
- Clear,
self-explanatory visual aids, comparing allocations to the arts to
allocations to other areas of the current budget, are presented.
- A spoof
of a current Broadway hit, performed by musicians, reinforces the
argument for keeping and increasing funds for the arts in the city
budget.
- Members
of the City Council respond with pertinent information about the budget
and some of the most pressing issues under negotiation.
Who
Attends
- Members
of the City Council and others in city government who are involved
in the budget process.
- Arts
representatives from various disciplines and all boroughs.
- Arts
lovers from the public sector who want to show their support.

the spring.
